What is the best week for 8K ultrasound?

January 13, 2024Updated April 23, 2026

Since an 8K ultrasound is an AI enhancement of your existing 3D scan (not a separate type of imaging), the timing depends on when you get the best 3D scan. For general 3D imaging, the sweet spot is 27–30 weeks. But for 8K specifically, many providers recommend aiming slightly later: 28–32 weeks.

Why the difference? By 28+ weeks, your baby has developed more facial fat, which gives the AI enhancement more defined features to work with. The cheeks are fuller, the facial contours are more distinct, and the result is a more lifelike portrait. Earlier scans still work, but the 8K output tends to look its best when the 3D source image has that extra detail.

The upper limit matters too—beyond 32 weeks, the baby may drop into the pelvis and there's less amniotic fluid for a clear view. So the ideal 8K window is 28–32 weeks, with 30 weeks being the sweet spot for most pregnancies.
